It was with extreme sadness that we had to announce the death of long-standing and much-loved member Ron Reynolds on Friday 7th May.
Ron joined Aldridge Running Club in 1991, serving on the Committee for many years and organising kit sales. He will also be remembered for the many social walks he organised for the Club, often longer than he said but always scenic and enjoyable! In recent years he was responsible for reviving the club Handicap competition, painstakingly compiling the records each month during the summer season. He was the recipient of our most prestigious award - the Paul Sebasatian Cup - in 2012.
Ron was an experienced runner, completing over 100 events at marathon distance or longer, with several over 80 miles. Once asked what his favourite distance was he replied "the longer the better". He was a sub-3 hour marathon runner, something that few club members have achieved. He was also a serious long-distance walker, covering many routes in the UK and abroad, with a West to East Coast of Scotland a favourite.
Ron is remembered by many runners, both within and outside of ARC for always being there with his camera, capturing memories at cross-country events, races, socials and of course our own 10k races. Known for never deleting or editing photos, some were not as flattering as we would like but we came to love these as much as those that made us look amazing! Many early photos can be viewed for a limited period on Photobucket and thousands from 2012 onwards can be found on his Flickr page We will never forget his picture shows at each Presentation Evening.
Ron was a talented footballer and brought these skills to our club football matches. He was once invited for a trial at Shrewsbury Town but the manager told him that he was too old (at 21), without seeing him play! He was also a referee. A keen Walsall supporter he was well known at the Banks' Stadium and was part of the match day groundsman team there.
Ron was also a key part of Walsall Arboretum parkrun, which he attended from its second meeting, first as a runner but increasingly as volunteer photographer, where he captured some fantastic photos over a period of almost eight years, mostly at the Arboretum but also at other venues, both with the club and with his family. Ron clocked up an impressive 300 parkrun volunteer credits and was well-known by regulars at the Arboretum, be they sub-16 minute speedsters or slow walkers - he was loved by all.
Ron travelled extensively with the club not only running and walking but cycling, with his camera at all times.
To say that Ron will be missed is a serious understatement and our thoughts are with his family at this time.
Thanks for everything Ron. Rest In Peace.
