ARC had another amazing parkrun turnout of 73 runners and walkers on Saturday 30th December, with 20 at Walsall Arboretum, 20 at Sutton Park and 3 at Beacon. Chasewater was cancelled to give volunteers a rest before opening on New Year's Day.

Well done to our top-10 finishers: Toby Oury (1st, 1st Age Grade), Lorraine Beesley (3rd lady, 1st Age Grade), Andrew Wood (5th), Claire Crook (6th lady), Peter Dimbleby (7th, 9th Age Grade), also to John Pearce and Mike Morley, who each came 8th in the age-graded table at their event.

Congratulations also to Eddie Evitt, who completed his 100th parkrun this weekend.

The club would also like to send congratulations to our old friend Barinderjit Singh Cheema (Usingh Bolt), who completed his personal challenge to run the distance from his house to Vancouver (4602 miles) during 2023 and to raise £4602 during the year. He completed the distance in the Arboretum at 12.00 noon on 31 December, accompanied by supporters, many of whom were ARC members. He also smashed his fundraising target and his fundraising page will remain open until the end of January 2024.

Christmas 2023

Saturday saw the 2nd League Cross Country race, with both men and women travelling to a hilly course in Stratford, where conditions were icy and foggy. Well done to all who ran:

Our Women's first team of Helen Beecham (41st), Claire Crook (61st), Shelley Nicholls (111) and Sally Gordon (159) came 20th out of 26 teams, whilst Helen, Claire and Shelley formed our Masters team, coming 9th out of 21 teams. Jessica Jungklaus (168, 1st xc), Rachel Antoine (172), Gemma Archer (176) and Nic Baker (177) formed our B team.
Our Men's first team of Bruce Fanshawe (8th), Liam Harrold (27th), Toby Oury (29th), Adam Smith (42nd), Quentin Oury (49th) and Andrew Wood (69th) came 5th out of 13 teams, with our B team of Luke White (92nd), Mike Morley(109), Stewart Jones (123), Scott Davies (143), Nick Beach (145) and Neil Brown (153) came in 7th place. Completing the tremendous turnout for the club were Phil Brayford (162), Pete Dimbleby (163), Harshad Patel (165), David Roberts (169), Martin Wall(194) and Mark Johnson (206). This leaves our team overall in 5th place after two events.

Saturday 11th also saw the first Cross Country League event of the season, with the women at Aldridge Airport, hosted jointly by ourselves and Birmingham City Striders, and the men at Cheltenham. We would like to thank all who helped make the Aldridge event a success, particularly Karen Waple, Tony Baker and Simon Hudson, for all their work behind the scenes in the months leading up to the event, as well as for their work on the day.

10K race AND CHILDREN'S RACEs - Well done ALL!

Congratulations to all who took part in our races on Sunday. It was certainly a hot one but we were pleased to see so many people enjoying the event, including lots of happy children and runners of all ages up to our oldest 10k entrant, 89-year old Sheila.

We were pleased again to cover most of the volunteer roles within the club, due to our rule that club members may not themselves compete, but were very grateful for support from several ex-members, also members of local churches, Aldridge Streetwatch and staff from the Hawthorns - thank you all.

We also offered official pacers this year, for the first time. Thank you Mike (sub-40), Pete (sub-50), Nicky (sub-60) and Mark (sub-70).

Tuesday 6th June saw the third in our series of Handicap races, where a record 45 members took part on a surprisingly chilly evening. Many thanks to Steve Blakemore for organising again, and for providing Haribos for all the finishers! The results can be found here.

In keeping with tradition, most ARC members refrained from racing this Sunday, in order to support our running festival. Tuesday 9th saw Ron's Retro Handicap, the second of this season's monthly races, dedicated to our friend Ron Reynolds, the much-loved member who was responsible for reviving the handicap in 2014. Following last week's marathon weekend at Manchester and Boston, Sunday 23rd saw the London Marathon, again featuring a good number of ARC members and friends, with many PBs and a new club marathon record set. It was also great to see the club represented by Nic Baker and Gemma Archer as finish-line volunteers, and to see the ARC Cheer Squad out at mile 22 again.

Marathon results showing GFA indicate where the member met the requirement for entering the 2024 London Marathon in the Good For Age category. This does not guarantee a place as there are only a limited number of places available and if there are more applications than places then the qualifying time will be lowered. Championships qualification is a guaranteed place.

Saturday's Sutton Park parkrun was followed by the ERRA National Road Relays, featuring our men's team, having qualified at the Midland's Championships two weeks' earlier. With many runners already on their way to run marathons the next day we were fortunate to get a team together. Well done and thank you, to Pete Dimbleby for the not inconsiderable task of putting a new team of 12 together, and to that team of Liam Harrold (29:38), Mandeep Chatha (20:47), Toby Oury (30:31), Quentin Oury (18:06), Mark Fanning (30:36), Jacob Barton (20:46), Bruce Fanshawe (29:47), Tom Pledger Barton (20:43), Alex Dicken (32:18), Andrew Wood (18:52), Michael Morley (31:55) and Harshad Patel (20:37), who came 49th out of 57 complete teams. In a change from the Midlands event the legs alternated between long (5.38 miles) and short (3.165 miles).

Congratulations also to new member Mike Donaghue, who completed the trail 35k Half Birthday Bash, with 4,500 feet of climing, in the Peak District on Saturday 15th, in a time of 06:46:45.

Sunday 16th saw a large number of our members taking part in events all over the country, including two marathons and another Grand Prix event, with many PBs and a new club age-category record set. Marathon results showing GFA indicate where the member met the requirement for entering the 2024 London Marathon in the Good For Age category. This does not guarantee a place as there are only a limited number of places available and if there are more applications than places then the qualifying time will be lowered.

Finishing off the weekend's achievements, Ben Dean completed the Boston Marathon on Monday 17th, in a PB time of 02:57:29 (GFA), making him the fastest ARC marathoner of the weekend. Congratulations Ben.

Next week will see a number of our members travelling to London to run in, or support, the London Marathon. As is traditional, the Tuesday club night following the London Marathon (in this case, Tuesday 25th April) will finish with a celebration buffet where all members are invited to wear t-shirts and medals that represent memorable achievements, whether these be from London, other marathons or other distances.

The 2023 club Handicap began on Tuesday, April 4th and will be continuing each month during the summer, finishing on August 1st. Make sure you have given your name to Steve Blakemore well in advance of the date you wish to start. The first event was a great success, with 35 runners and handicaps working as intended to bring runners together at the finish. Saturday 25th saw the climax of the 2021-22 Cross Country season, with the English National Championships at Bolesworth Castle, Chester. Congratulations to all our members who took part, despite travel problems caused by congestion at the site. It was good also to see Jo Dulson-Cox's cheery face at the finish line, where she was officiating:

Women (>8k, 774 finishers): Karen Kiteley (446), Anne Kelsall (664), Sarah Bishop (760) and Lucy Baker (762). With thanks to Jo Yarnall, who drove the team there but then was unable to make the start due to parking delays. The team was placed 91st out of 93 teams.

Sunday 26th saw another club Grand Prix race - the Walton Wobble. Congratulations to Liam Harrold, who gained 2nd place overall, with a time of 00:35:22, also to Jo Yarnall (01:06:51) and Gemma Archer (01:10:37).

Also on Sunday 26th there was the Leicestershire Half Marathon at Prestwold Hall. Congratulations to Michael Webb, who completed this in a time of 01:40:42.

Following ARC's successful foodbank collection at Walsall Arboretum parkrun on Saturday 4th February we held our first Foodbank Run on Tuesday 7, where we were somewhat overwhelmed by the generosity of members. All donations have gone to The Black Country Foodbank, Walsall and the Thomas Project, Aldridge. We are very grateful to Karen Waple and the other volunteers who made this happen, also for all the club members who contributed. It is hoped that another foodbank run will be arranged for a time later in the year.

Saturday also saw the 4th and final league race of the cross country season, with the men's team tackling a brutally hill course at Burton Dassett, whilst the women enjoyed a flat, fast course at Coombe Abbey, Coventry.

The men's first team of Bruce Fanshawe (16th), Adam Smith (24th), Liam Harrold (26th), Lee Harris (59th), Luke White (69th) and Mike Morley (79th) were placed 7th, helping the club to an overall 8th place for the season. Pete Dimbleby (114), Steve Blakemore (121), Harshad Patel (143), Mark O'Rourke (144) and Lawrence Hewitt (168) completed the ARC turnout, with Lee, Mike, Pete and Steve forming our Masters team, which came 9th overall. In the individual competition for the season (best 3 results) we had two runners feature in the top 20: Adam Smith (14th) and Bruce Fanshawe (16th), with Liam Harrold 28th, Lee Harris 51st, Luke White 75th, Pete Dimbleby 103rd, Harshad Patel 113th, and Lawrence Hewitt 137th.

Our women's cross-country team had a great time on Saturday 28th at the Midlands Cross Country Championships at Leamington. Our Turkey trotters were Luke White (00:30:14), Simon Hudson (00:42:29) and Wendy Sargeant (00:44:23, 1st FV65) whilst Rachael Jones was our sole runner at Sherwood, finishing in 00:50:52. Well done all.

In warmer and more undulating conditions we had two members donning GB Masters vests for the European Masters Athletics Marathon Championships in Funchal, Madeira. Congratulations to Peter and Lisa Dimbleby, who finished in 03:37:04 and 05:03:09 respectively.

Saturday 14th also saw the third race in this season's cross country league, with the women at Aldridge Airport, jointly hosted by ARC and Birmingham City Striders, and the men at Bromsgrove. The organisation of the Aldridge event went extremely well and congratulations go to the organising team of Jo Dulson-Cox, Tony Baker, Karen Waple and Simon Hudson, also to all those who volunteered on the day and helped make the event a success.

Our men's 'A' team of Bruce Fanshawe (20th), Adam Smith (24th), Liam Harrold (28th), Toby Oury (35th), Lee Harris (66th) and Ben Dean (103) finished 6th out of 14 teams competing in Division 2, with Luke White (106), Michael Morley (110), Pete Dimbleby (148), Harshad Patel (173) and Lawrence Hewitt (199) completing the ARC team. Lee, Mike, Pete and Harshad also formed a Masters team, which finished 11th (in cross-country eligibility for Masters is calculated on the age at the beginning of the season). This result leaves the club sitting comfortably in 7th place overall after 3 of the 4 races this season.
Our Women's 'A' team of Karen Kiteley (50th), Claire Crook (75th), Rachael Jones (82nd) and Lucy Farrington (86th) finished in 15th place out of 29 clubs fielding full teams.
